May 26, 2022:  Governor Mifflin 12, Hempfield 2

Hempfield’s 2022 Varsity season came to an end at the hands of the Governor Mifflin Mustangs.  The home team scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back, adding six in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to end the game via ten run rule.

In the first inning, Travis Jenkins’ double scored the second and third runs for Governor Mifflin, after their first run scored on a wild pitch.  In the fourth inning, a two out double off the bat of Alex Velez brought home two more runs, and the Mustangs connected for four more consecutive hits, all with two outs, to tally a six run inning.

After getting into a three run deficit, Hempfield closed the margin in the top of the fourth inning.  Chuck Sheerer singled to center and scored on Marcus Rivera’s RBI single.  Peter Fiore would score the final run for the Black Knights in the fifth inning after singling and crossing the plate on a wild pitch.

The loss will end the 2022 season for the Black Knights. The coaching staff would like to wish seniors Cameron Berger, Gavin Constein, Austin Dunlap and Ethan Smith success in their future endeavors.

With the loss, Hempfield finishes the season with a 15-7 record and a 6-4 record in Section One, tied for second place in the section with Manheim Township.

May 23, 2022:  Hempfield 6, Cedar Cliff 0

Austin Dunlap’s masterful pitching performance helped lead the visiting Black Knights past the Cedar Cliff Colts in the first round of the PIAA District Three Tournament in Camp Hill.  The senior left hander went the distance, recording 21 outs on an efficient 78 pitches.  He struck out six and walked one, and yielded only two singles to the Colts offense.  To the delight of his coaches, Dunlap was able to retire the side in order in both the fourth and sixth innings, and he faced only four batters more than the minimum for seven innings.  And, a credit to the Hempfield defense, which was outstanding on the day – both the infield, catching, and outfield play was strong behind Dunlap.

After the Black Knight offense was mostly dormant over the first three innings, Peter Fiore doubled to lead off the fourth inning and later scored on Austin Dunlap’s sacrifice.  Stephen Katch singled to left to score Michael Rieker, who was on to run for Dunlap.  Unfortunately, Hempfield would strand two runners to end the fourth inning, strand two more in the fifth, and another in the sixth.

Logan Harelson reached on an infield error to lead off the seventh inning, and Hempfield then received two walks and two hit batters to push across runs three and four; Stephen Katch lifted a sacrifice fly to score the Black Knight’s fifth run, and the unstoppable Michael Reiker scored the final run on a passed ball.

With the win, Hempfield improves to 15-6 overall and 6-4 in Section One, tied for second place in the section with Manheim Township. It is the 830th win for the Hempfield Baseball Program.

May 10, 2022:  Hempfield 6, J.P. McCaskey 1

Hempfield was able to use a four run fifth inning to get past the J.P. McCaskey Red Tornados.  It was a perfect evening for high school baseball in the Red Rose City.

Hempfield took the lead in the top of the third inning with two outs and no one on base.  Logan Harelson worked a walk and Cameron Berger reached on an infield error.  Peter Fiore’s single to center field scored Michael Rieker, who was running for Harelson.

Cameron Berger and friends were able to start the Hempfield offense in the top of the fifth inning.  Berger singled to left field before Peter Fiore walked to put runners on first and second.  Austin Dunlap followed with a single to load the bases.  A single to left, off the bat of Josh Toole, plated Berger and Fiore.  Stephen Katch singled to left to score Dunlap, and the final run of the inning scored on Chuck Sheerer’s sacrifice fly to center.  Hempfield’s was able to add an additional run in the seventh inning.  Josh Toole doubled with one out.  Stephen Katch’s line drive off the pitcher resulted in a fielder’s choice ground out, but advanced Hunter Williams (running for Toole) to third base.  Williams scored on a single from Chuck Sheerer.

On the mound for Hempfield, the left handed combination of Logan Harelson and Austin Dunlap kept the Red Tornado offense in check throughout the evening.  Although McCaskey was able to put their leadoff batters on base in the first two innings, Hempfield escaped both innings without any runs scoring.  In the fourth inning, Braulio Rivera and Alex Ruiz singled and doubled, respectively, to put runners at second and third with no outs.  With one out, Orion Frailey’s sacrifice fly scored Rivera, but Harelson was able to get a ground ball out to retire the side.  With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, and runners on first and second base, Austin Dunlap relieved Harelson to get the final out of the frame.  Dunlap pitched outstanding in relief, retiring all seven batters he faced.  The pitching combination struck out twelve and allowed two hits.

The JV Knights were victorious with a score of 8-1. The JV Knights are 12-5 on the season.

With the win, Hempfield is 14-6 and finishes at 6-4 in Section One, tied for second place in the section with Manheim Township. It is the 829th win for the Hempfield Baseball Program.

May 4, 2022:  Warwick 8, Hempfield 1

Warwick’s bats exploded for 14 hits as the Warriors scored in every inning except the fifth to win against the visiting Hempfield Black Knights.

Aaron Hess’ two run home run scored Warwick lead off batter David Wooley to give the Warriors a two run lead in the first inning.  In the second inning, Seth Adomnik led off with a single to right field and later scored on David Wooley’s double to right center.  Three more Warwick runs crossed in the third inning.  Nick Slogik’s home run to right center scored Matthew Williams, who led off the inning with a single to left.  After Slogik’s home run, Chase Martin singled and scored on Chance Montgomery’s single to right.  Nick Slogik drove in a Warrior run in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Aaron Hess who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.  Matthew Williams’ single to left, in the bottom of the sixth inning, scored Aaron Hess for Warwick’s final run.

Hempfield’s offense was kept in check by Warwick pitcher Matt Seibert.  Seibert allowed only four hits and five total base runners.  He struck out six and did not walk a batter, at one point retiring nine Black Knight hitters in a row.  Hempfield was able to score its lone run in the top of the seventh inning.  Austin Dunlap singled to right and scored on Josh Toole’s double to left center.

Due to field conditions, there was no JV game.

With the loss, Hempfield is 13-6 overall and 5-4 in Section One.

May 2, 2022:  Hempfield 11, Cedar Crest 1

Hempfield scored seven runs in the home first inning, and added a run in the third and three in the fourth to get past the visiting Cedar Crest Falcons on an outstanding spring day for baseball.

Logan Harelson got the start on the mound for the Black Knights.  He allowed a run in the first inning on two hits to left field, but retired the last two batters of the inning on strikeouts to quell the threat.  Pitching in front of his adoring legion of fans, the sophomore seemed to get stronger as the game went on; he did not allow a hit to the visitors over the last four innings.  Clearly buoyed by the excitement and buzz amongst the several fans at J.K. Mechanical Field due to Ankle Sock Night (where the first 50 fans received a new pair of ankle socks (thanks to Hot Z Pizza for sponsoring)), Harelson struck out six and walked three over five innings.

Cameron Berger and friends answered Cedar Crest’s run in the top of the first.  Berger singled to left, Peter Fiore was hit by a pitch, and Austin Dunlap singled to load the bases.  Josh Toole drew a walk to score Berger before Stephen Katch and Aiden Rodenberger reached on Falcon errors that scored Fiore and Dunlap.  Gavin Constein singled and Logan Harelson brought home Rodenberger with a sacrifice fly to left.  Cameron Berger brought home the inning’s seventh run when he singled to score Constein.

Gavin Constein had a hand in Hempfield’s run in the third inning when he singled and later scored on Austin Dunlap’s sacrifice fly.  With two out and no one on base in the bottom of the fourth, Hempfield rallied to score three runs.  Chuck Sheerer, Ethan Smith and Gavin Constein singled consecutively, and a double to left-center from Logan Harelson brought home Smith and Constein.

The JV Knights were winners by a score of 5-4. The JV Knights are 10-5 on the season.

With the win, Hempfield is 13-5 and 5-3 in Section One. It is the 828th win for the Hempfield Baseball Program.

April 29, 2022:  Manheim Township 9, Hempfield 6

Manheim Township used a seven run third inning to defeat Hempfield.  The Blue Streaks scored two runs in the first inning on two singles, two walks and a hit batsman.  With one out and no one on base in the third inning, a single to center, walk, and single to left brought home one run and put runners on first and second with one out.  A ground out to third base advanced the runners to second and third with two outs.  The next six batters reached – walk, walk, single to left, home run to left, infield error, walk – before the final out was recorded on an infield ground out.

After Hempfield fought back to retake the lead in the top of the third inning, 3-2, the bottom of the frame saw Manheim Township in front 9-3.

Hempfield scored three runs in the top of the third inning when Gavin Constein reached on a single to right.  With two outs, Peter Fiore walked and Austin Dunlap tripled to right center to score Constein and Fiore.  Dunlap later scored on a wild pitch.  In the top of the fifth, Hempfield would add three more runs.  Cody Fatta, Cameron Berger and Peter Fiore drew consecutive walks to load the bases.  An RBI fielders choice from Austin Dunlap scored Fatta; Berger scored on a wild pitch; and Josh Toole’s single up the middle brought home Fiore.

The JV Knights fell by a score of 8-4. The JV Knights are 9-4 on the season.

Hempfield is 12-5 overall and 4-3 in Section One.

April 27, 2022:  Hempfield 3, Penn Manor 1

Stephen Katch’s sacrifice fly to right field plated the deciding run in the sixth inning, and Hempfield was able to survive and advance past the visiting Penn Manor Comets on an overcast, cold and blustery afternoon.

Penn Manor took advantage of a first inning walk to Isaac Braegelman.  Hunter Sipel singled to right to put Comet runners on first and second; Dalton Green’s line drive to left fell for a hit and scored Bragelman.  With runners on second and third, Hempfield was able to record the next two outs without further damage.

The Black Knights answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first.  Josh Toole’s single to right field scored Peter Fiore, who had reached earlier in the inning on a walk.

The teams would trade zeros until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Josh Toole drew a walk to lead off the inning.  Chuck Sheerer’s swinging bunt – putting the ball in play with two strikes – was misplayed by the defense, reminding everyone of what happens when bunts don’t get fielded.  Logan Harelson, running for Toole, advanced to third base and Sheerer advanced to second.  Stephen Katch’s aforementioned sacrifice fly scored Harelson and advanced Sheerer to third.  With two outs, Gavin Constein reached on an infield error and Sheerer scored Hempfield’s third run.

Aiden Rodenberger was the man on the mound for Hempfield.  The stoic righthander worked through five and one-third innings, striking out eight and walking three.  He allowed three hits and, to the delight of his coaches, did not hit a batter.  Rodenberger gave way to Austin Dunlap with one out and runner on second with the score tied at one in the sixth inning.  Dunlap was able to get out of sixth, stranding the Comet runner, and finished the top of the seventh inning for the save.  The pitching tandem was backed by a strong defensive effort, again, much to the delight of the coaching staff.

The JV Knights were winners with a 10-2 score.  The JV Knights are 9-3 on the season.

With the win, Hempfield is 12-4 overall and 4-2 in Section One. It is the 827th win for the Hempfield Baseball Program.

April 25, 2022:  Hempfield 10, Lampeter-Strasburg 0

Logan Harelson’s nine strikeout, one hit effort on the mound helped lead the host Hempfield Black Knights over the visiting Pioneers from Lampeter-Strasburg.

After successfully and awesomely retiring the first batter of the game, Harelson worked around an infield error and a walk by retiring the side on a strikeout.  Pitching in front of his adoring legion of fans, Harelson was able to find a groove in innings two through five.  The sophomore allowed a single to left to lead off the third inning, but worked through the L-S offense despite the noise directed at him.

Cameron Berger and friends managed to score two runs on one hit in the bottom of the first.  Berger drew a walk and Peter Fiore was hit by a pitch to put two aboard with no out.  Austin Dunlap’s fielder’s choice ground out scored Berger, and Peter Fiore would later score on a Pioneer error.  In the second inning, Logan Harelson and Aiden Rodenberger reached base with no outs, and Cameron Berger brought home both runs with a single to center.  With Berger aboard, Peter Fiore walked and Austin Dunlap singled to load the bases with Knights.  A walk to Josh Toole would score Berger, and Fiore would score on a wild pitch for the inning’s fourth run.  Unfortunately, Hempfield squandered a golden opportunity for more runs by leaving the bases loaded.

Aiden Rodenberger walked to lead off the home fifth.  Cameron Berger singled to right.  With one out, Rodenberger scored on Austin Dunlap’s sacrifice fly to center.  Another walk to Josh Toole would put Black Knights on the corners and Chuck Sheerer in the driver’s seat.  Sheerer’s single to right scored Berger, and advanced Michael Rieker (running for Toole), to third base.  Stephen Katch’s single to left would score Rieker and bring the game to its conclusion.

The JV Knight were winners by a score of 7-1.  The JV Knights are 8-3 on the season.

With the win, Hempfield is 11-4 overall and 3-2 in Section One. It is the 826th win for the Hempfield Baseball Program.

April 22, 2022:  Ephrata 6, Hempfield 5

Ryan Bromirksi’s bases loaded walk, in the bottom of the 8th inning, scored the deciding run and gave a hard fought victory to the Ephrata Mountaineers.

In a game that featured lead changes, momentum changes and great defensive plays, Ephrata was ultimately able to capitalize on their opportunities while Hempfield proved equally up to the task, but just a bit short on the score board.

The Mountaineers jumped on Hempfield early and often – with three runs scoring in the first seven Mountaineer hitters. Four Ephrata singles, sandwiched around two sacrifice flies, gave the home team a three run advantage after one inning.  Hempfield would respond in the top of the second inning when Chuck Sheerer and Marcus Rivera drew walks; with two men aboard Gavin Constein singled to left, and left fielder Ryan Bromirski’s throw to the plate was late and off-line; but Sheerer was called out trying to score and the threat was ended.

In the top of the third, Hempfield scored four runs to take the lead.  Aiden Rodenberger singled to left, and after a throwing error allowed Cameron Berger to reach base and advance to second, Peter Fiore and Austin Dunlap hit back to back sacrifice flies to score Rodenberger and Berger.  Hempfield was not finished.  A single from Josh Toole and two more walks to Chuck Sheerer and Marcus Rivera put Michael Rieker in the drivers seat.  Rieker’s single to right-center scored Sheerer and Rivera and gave Hempfield the lead, 4-3.  The Empire Struck Back in the bottom of the third.  The Mountaineers’ Mason Hershberger reached on a walk and Tanner McCraken was hit by a pitch with two outs.  An extra base hit off the bat of Ryan Bromirksi scored Ephrata’s two runners to give the home team a 5-4 edge.

The teams would trade zeros on the score board over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings as the defenses bent but would not break – both Ephrata and Hempfield worked brilliantly out of situations with runners on base.  In the top of the seventh, down to their final two outs, Hempfield was able to find an opening.  Austin Dunlap reached on a single and a walk to Josh Toole put two on for the Black Knights.  Chuck Sheerer’s single up the middle scored Dunlap to tie the game; unfortunately, Hempfield was unable to push any further runs across.

Sadly, the game would end without Ephrata putting the ball in play.  The bottom of the eighth inning saw the Mountaineers reach on two hit batsmen and two walks to end the game.  Ephrata connect for six hits in their first sixteen batters and had zero hits in their final eighteen batters.

The JV Knights were winners by a score of 9-1. The JV Knights are 7-3 on the season.

With the loss, Hempfield is 10-4 overall and 3-2 in Section One.

April 20, 2022:  Hempfield 16, Conestoga Valley 1

Playing in the cathedral of baseball that is the varsity field at Conestoga Valley High School, the visiting Black Knights were able to score runs in every offensive inning to pull away from the Buckskins in Smoketown.  In a setting that is perfectly picturesque (Lancaster County farmland, Amish children coming home from school, an Amtrack train running on the horizon, baseball fields), Hempfield capitalized on their opportunities early and often.

Cameron Berger and friends got the offense rolling in the first inning, as Berger reached on a Buckskin error and was followed by consecutive base hits from Peter Fiore, Austin Dunlap, Josh Toole and Chuck Sheerer to score three Hempfield runs.  Three more runs scored in the second inning: Aiden Rodenberger walked and Cameron Berger singled; Peter Fiore reached on an error and Austin Dunlap singled to right to score Berger.  Josh Toole brought home the inning’s final run on a sacrifice fly to center field.

Hempfield again scored three runs in each of the third and fourth innings; in the fifth inning Austin Dunlap’s grand slam brought home four runs for the Black Knights.

In what was a total team effort on the field and at the plate, Jake Seasock, Scott Sauer, Ethan Smith, Quinn Adams, Colin Richardson and Brogan Reihart did a great job for their team when called upon.

Hunter Williams completed three innings, allowing one run on a solo home run in the bottom of the third.  Williams struck out six, walked none, allowed four hits and hit two batters.  Caden Woods collected two outs in the bottom of the fourth, via strikeout, before yielding to Noah Costa who finished the game for Hempfield.

The JV Knights were victorious by a score of 8-5.  The JV Knights are 6-3 on the season.

With the win, Hempfield is 10-3 overall and 3-2 in Section One. It is the 825th win for the Hempfield Baseball Program.

April 19, 2022:  Hempfield 10, Lebanon 0

Hempfield used a three run third inning and a six run fourth inning to pull away from the host Lebanon Cedars on a blustery afternoon that was anything but baseball weather.

After putting runners on base in the first two innings with nothing to show for it, Hempfield reached the scoreboard in the third inning when Michael Rieker and Aiden Rodenberger reached on Lebanon errors.  Peter Fiore and Austin Dunlap smacked back to back singles to score Rieker and Rodenberger before Fiore crossed for the inning’s final run on Josh Toole’s RBI ground out.

In the fourth inning, Gavin Constein started the offense with a one out single to center.  Michael Rieker was hit by a pitch and Aiden Rodenberger loaded the bases with a single to center field.  With the infield drawn in, Cameron Berger laced a line drive up the middle to bring home two runs.  Another single from Peter Fiore scored Rodenberger, and a walk to Austin Dunlap loaded the bases for the Josh Toole.  Toole’s sacrifice fly to left scored Berger, and Chuck Sheerer ended the scoring by bringing home Fiore and Dunlap with a line drive single to right field.

Hempfield was led by Logan Harelson on the mound.  Battling through intermittent blasts of wind, the young left hander worked through some trouble in the early innings by striking out the side in the first and making a leaping, acrobatic stop on a ground ball back to the mound with the bases loaded in the second.  Harelson struck out eight, walked five and allowed only two singles to the Cedar offense.  Noah Costa relieved Harelson in the fifth, working a quick and efficient inning to end the game for the Black Knights.

The JV Knights did not play.

With the win, Hempfield is 9-3 overall and 3-2 in Section One. It is the 824th win for the Hempfield Baseball Program.

April 16, 2022:  Hempfield 2, “Wilson” 1

Gavin Constein’s single to center field, with two outs and two on in the sixth inning, scored Logan Harelson and was the game’s deciding run.

Starting pitchers Aiden Rodenberger and Matt VanOstenbridge pitched very well for their respective teams, and offense was at a premium for most of the day.

Rodenberger was able to settle in after a first inning in which two batters reached base on neither a hit or error.  Despite his meatball-like offerings, Rodenberger kept “Wilson’s” offense in check much of the day.  The righthander struck out seven, walked three, and allowed only two hits.  In the third inning, Rueben Livingston put the Bulldogs on the board with a solo home run to left field.

In the top of the third inning, Rodenberger helped his cause by reaching on an infield single.  Michael Rieker made a big impact on the game coming in to courtesy run for his pitcher, and took second base to put a Hempfield runner in scoring position.  Cameron Berger’s double to left-center scored Rieker and staked the Black Knights to a short lived one run lead.

Sixth inning: with the game tied at one, Josh Toole doubled down the left field line with one out.  Logan Harelson came on to run for Toole and moved to third on Chuck Sheerer’s fielders choice ground out.  Marcus Rivera drew a walk, setting the stage for Constein’s aforementioned heroics.

With six outs to go, “Wilson” did not go quietly.  Rodenberger retired the first batter of the sixth on fly ball; Rueben Livingston drew a walk.  After Christo Hunskicker struck out for the second out, Ryan Sekulski singled to center and Livingston advanced to third.  With runners on the corners and the game hanging in the balance, Jake Kope drew a walk to load the bases.  Cameron Berger relieved Rodenberger, and was able to channel the Ice Man (Andrew Blough) to end the Wilson threat.

Hempfield was unable to generate offense in the seventh inning and Berger closed out the game with consecutive strikeouts to finish the save.

The JV Knights were winners by a score of 6-5.  The JV Knights are 5-3 on the season.

With the win, Hempfield is 8-3 overall and 3-2 in Section One. It is the 823rd win for the Hempfield Baseball Program.

April 13, 2022:  Hempfield 4, Solanco 1

Playing their fifth game in six days, Hempfield was able to find a way to win over the visiting Solanco Golden Mules on a warm, humid day that felt more like July than April.  After all, it was only three days earlier at Dallastown that Hempfield played in rain, snow and hail – an inconvenient truth about the climate, indeed.

Austin Dunlap threw a complete game, giving the Black Knights just what they needed on the mound. Dunlap allowed only two infield singles through 24 batters.  The 25th batter that Dunlap faced, Dylan Dean, singled down the left field line; Chuck Sheerer ended the game by throwing Dean out at second base.  Dunlap struck out five, walked two and hit one batter by a pitched ball. Dean’s single to left scored Solanco catcher Nate Harnish, who reached earlier in the inning on a Hempfield error.

Hempfield scored one run in the first inning and added three in bottom of the fifth.  Cameron Berger doubled to left field to start the game and Peter Fiore walked.  A base hit to left field from Josh Toole would be the extent of the offense in the first inning, but Hempfield would load the bases with no outs in the second.  Unfortunately, Solanco starter Brayden Herr was able to get three outs without a run scoring and the Black Knights squandered a great opportunity to take control of the game.  But in the fifth, Hempfield found a way to score three runs.  Cameron Berger singled to center and Austin Dunlap reached on an infield single; a Solanco error would score Berger before Josh Toole and Chuck Sheerer reached on consecutive singles.  Sheerer’s single scored Hunter Williams, who was running for Dunlap; Marcus Rivera reached on an infield error that scored Michael Rieker, who was running for Toole.

The JV Knights were winners with a score of 9-0. The JV Knights improve to 4-3 on the season.

With the win, Hempfield is 7-3 overall and 3-2 in Section One. It is the 822nd win for the Hempfield Baseball Program.

April 12, 2022:  Warwick 5, Hempfield 3

Warwick scored two runs in the first inning to grab control of the game and take a lead they would not relinquish to win on the road in Landisville.

In the first inning, Warwick scored two runs in four batters with the assistance of an infield error and a hit batter.  Matt Seibert doubled to left to score lead off batter David Woolley and Aaron Hess scored on Matt Williams’ sacrifice fly to left.  In the second inning, a hit batsman crossed the plate when Hempfield threw a bunted ball into right field.  In the first eleven batters, Warwick scored three runs on two hits, reached base on two Black Knight errors, two hit batters and one walk.

With no outs and the bases loaded in the second inning, starting pitcher Hunter Williams eluded further trouble by coaxing two shallow pop flies and getting the inning’s third out on a line drive to left field Chuck Sheerer.

In the bottom of the second, Hempfield narrowed the lead.  Austin Dunlap drew a walk and Marcus Rivera singled, and Hempfield drew within two runs when the inning ended with a 3-1 score.  Hempfield added another in the bottom of the third.  Aiden Rodenberger singled to right but was forced out at second base when Cameron Berger grounded out.  Chuck Sheerer drew a walk and Peter Fiore reached on an infield error to load the bases.  Josh Toole drew a two out walk to score Berger, but Hempfield ended the inning with the bases full and a 3-2 score.

The visiting fourth started with another runner on base – via a lead off walk.  David Woolley reached second on a stolen base, but was thrown out at the plate by Marcus Rivera when Matt Seibert singled through the right side.  Warwick again capitalized on a defensive gift when Matt Williams struck out to potentially end the inning, but strike three was not contained by the Hempfield defense.  Given an extra out, Warwick again capitalized. Nick Slogik’s two out single to deep short stop scored Tyson Kline, who was running for Seibert.  Through three and one half innings, the score was 4-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, Marcus Rivera singled and Gavin Constein doubled to start the inning.  Michael Rieker drew a walk to load the bases with none out.  Aiden Rodenberger hit into a 4-6-3 double play, which scored Rivera, but Warwick was able to steer clear of further damage in the inning.  After four, Hempfield trailed 4-3.

The teams would exchange zeros on the score board in the fifth and sixth innings.  With a one run lead in the top of the seventh, Seth Adomnik drew a one out walk off of reliever Noah Costa and reached second on Brenden Stughltrager’s bunt single with two outs.  Austin Dunlap came on to get lead off batter David Wooley, but Wooley chopped Dunlap’s 2-1 offering past the mound and an errant throw wide of first base allowed Adomnik to score to extend the margin by two runs.  The Black Knights did not go without a fight in the bottom of the seventh.  Chuck Sheerer reached with two outs on a walk, and Peter Fiore reached first after a Warwick infield error to represent the tying run, 270 feet away.  Unfortunately, Warwick reliever Chase Martin was able to secure the last out for the Warriors.

The JV Knights were winners by a score of 10-0 and improve to 3-3 on the season.

With the loss, Hempfield is 6-3 and 3-2 in Section One play.

April 11, 2022:  Hempfield 10, Elizabethtown 2

Logan Harelson pitched five and two-thirds innings, keeping Elizabethtown off the score board in every inning except the third, to lead Hempfield to victory.  Cameron Berger relieved Harelson with two outs and one on in the sixth and recorded the final four outs for the Black Knights.  Elizabethtown put runners on the bases in each inning, but Harelson was able to work out of trouble most of the afternoon.  Elizabethtown’s two runs came on Cole Chrzanowksi’s home run to right field.  Harelson struck out eight, walked six and scattered three hits.  Berger struck out three and did not surrender a walk.

Cameron Berger and friends scored a run in the first inning.  After Berger and Dunlap patiently drew walks to start the game, Josh Toole’s sacrifice fly scored Berger.  Austin Dunlap clubbed a solo home run to right field in the third inning; Chuck Sheerer’s RBI ground out scored Peter Fiore who singled to reach base earlier in the inning.

In the visitor’s fourth inning, Hempfield took advantage of three Elizabethtown errors to plate three runs on but one hit.  After the inning that never was in the fifth, and with the game still in the balance with Hempfield leading 6-2, Cameron Berger singled to center before Austin Dunlap walked.  An RBI single by Peter Fiore scored Berger and advanced Dunlap to third; Dunlap would score on an RBI ground out from Josh Toole.  Hempfield’s final two runs in the seventh came courtesy of Marcus Rivera’s solo home run into the bleachers beyond the left field fence.  Gavin Constein singled to left and scored later in the inning on Cameron Berger’s fielders choice ground out.

The JV Knights were winners by a score of 8-3 and improve to 2-3 on the season.

With the win, Hempfield is 6-2 and 3-1 in Section One play. It is the 821st win for the Hempfield Baseball Program.

April 9, 2022:  Hempfield 4, Dallastown 2

The visiting Hempfield Black Knights cobbled together a few runs and were able to keep the Dallastown bats in check to win on the road.

Cameron Berger and friends were able to stake Hempfield to a 1-0 lead in the first inning.  Berger walked and after advancing to second base, was able to score on an error in the infield.  In the fifth inning, Berger again ignited the Hempfield offense by drawing a walk.  Berger scored as Austin Dunlap reached base, and Dunlap scored as Peter Fiore reached base.  With Fiore at third and one out, Chuck Sheerer’s RBI ground out scored Fiore for Hempfield’s final run.  Sheerer was able to accomplish the run batted in because he put the ball in play.

Aiden Rodenberger was the winning pitcher for Hempfield.  The placid Rodenberger finished six complete, through occasional rain and hail, before Cameron Berger came on in the seventh to earn the save.  Rodenberger struck out five, walked three and allowed four Dallastown hits

Dallastown scored a run in the third inning when Brady Altland singled to right and scored on a single off the bat of Conner Barto.  In the fifth, Atland reached on a Hempfield error and scored when Cade Flinchbaugh singled to center.

The JV Knights did not play.

With the win, Hempfield is 5-2 and 3-1 in Section One play. It is the 820th win for the Hempfield Baseball Program.

April 8, 2022:  Hempfield 10, J.P. McCaskey 5

The rains ended, the skies parted and Hempfield hosted the visiting J.P. McCaskey Red Tornado on a beautiful afternoon for baseball in Landisville.

With the score tied at 0-0 in the bottom of the second inning, Chuck Sheerer, Logan Harelson and Gavin Constein reached on consecutive base hits; it was Aiden Rodenberger’s two-out single to right that brought home the contest’s first two runs.  The Black Knights would add two runs in the bottom of the third when Austin Dunlap and Peter Fiore reached to start the inning; Dunlap scored on a McCaskey error and Fiore crossed the plate on Sheerer’s sacrifice fly to center.

The visitors answered with three runs of their own in the fourth.  A lead off walk, a single to right, an error in the infield and a hit batter set the stage for a big inning.  With the bases loaded and two outs, Tobe Kuntz’s single to left brought home runs two and three for McCaskey.

With the game in the balance in the bottom of the fourth, Hempfield scored four of their own.  Gavin Constein, Cody Fatta and Aiden Rodenberger reached to start the inning, and Cameron Berger’s single to left brought home Constein and Fatta.  Rodenberger and Austin Dunlap would later score thanks to an infield error.

The persistent McCaskey offense would not go down quietly.  A lead off walk to Elliot Fluck started a two run inning.  Alex Ruiz singled to right and Braulio Rivera was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Adrian Rodriguez singled home Fluck and Ruiz.

Hempfield would add single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.  In the fifth, Aiden Rodenberger singled home Logan Harelson; in the sixth, Gavin Constein’s sacrifice fly to center scored Marcus Rivera, who was running for Josh Toole.

On the mound, Hempfield was led by Hunter Williams and Austin Dunlap.  Williams completed 5 and 2/3 innings before yielding to Dunlap with the bases loaded in the fifth.  Dunlap worked out the fifth inning and shut down the visitors in the sixth and seventh to seal the victory for the Black Knights.  Williams struck out three and walked two while allowing four hits; Dunlap struck out two, walked none, and allowed three hits.

A special thanks to our players for helping prep the field today and getting it ready to play – much like we see done by the football and basketball teams, pre-game.

The JV Knights did not play.

With the win, Hempfield is 4-2 and 3-1 in Section One play. It is the 819th win for the Hempfield Baseball Program.

April 4, 2022:  Hempfield 15, Cedar Crest 2

Hempfield scored runs in the second, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings on offense while Logan Harelson and Austin Dunlap kept the Cedar Crest offense in check over seven innings of baseball in Cornwall.

The visitors put two runners in scoring position in the first inning and ended up with nothing to show for it; in the second inning the Black Knights scored when Chuck Sheerer was hit by a pitch and crossed the plate on Marcus Rivera’s double to left; Rivera would score the inning’s second run on a Falcon error.  The tandem would produce another run in the fourth inning when Sheerer singled and Rivera doubled.  Cameron Berger led off the fifth inning with a single into right field, and a single from Austin Dunlap put runners at the corners.  Peter Fiore’s sacrifice fly scored Berger and advanced Dunlap to third base, where he waited patiently for Josh Toole to single to left and score him.   Chuck Sheerer brought home the inning’s final run with a double to right center to score Michael Reiker, who was running for Toole.

In the final two frames, the Black Knights pushed across nine runs and sent 19 batters to the plate.

On the mound, Logan Harelson completed five innings for Hempfield.  The sophomore struck out seven, walked three and allowed five hits.  Cedar Crest scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth when Noah Gonzalez walked and Deklyn Marks doubled.  A sacrifice fly, walk and infield single scored Gonzalez and Marks, but Harelson induced a double play ball that was turned nicely by Cody Fatta, Peter Fiore and Cameron Berger to end the threat.  Austin Dunlap closed the door on Cedar Crest, striking out four over the final two innings.

The JV Knights fell in a close game, 2-1. The JV Knights are 1-3 on the season.

With the win, Hempfield is 3-2 and 2-1 in Section One play. It is the 818th win for the Hempfield Baseball Program.

April 1, 2022: Hempfield 5, Manheim Township 2

Hunter Williams capped off an eventful week of baseball, pitching his Black Knights team past the visiting Manheim Township Blue Streaks.  In a game played in relentless winds (thanks to the El Nino jet stream), Township scored in the top of the first inning when Fisher Druck singled home J.T. Weaver.  Williams would keep the Blue Streaks off the board until the seventh inning.  Ty Jenkins drew a lead off walk and scored on an infield error.  Despite the error in the seventh, Hempfield played brilliant defense throughout the contest, especially in the middle infield.

Having reached the pitch limit in the 7th inning with one out, Williams yielded to Aiden Rodenberger, who came on for the save.  The excitable Rodenberger allowed a single to center before retiring the next two batters to end the game for Hempfield. Williams finished the game with eight strikeouts, six walks and allowed three hits.

Hempfield tied the game in the bottom of the second when Chuck Sheerer drew a walk and Logan Harelson singled to left.  With runners at the corners, Gavin Constein’s sacrifice line out to right field scored Sheerer to tie the game.  In the bottom of the third, Rodenberger started the inning with a double to left.  Cameron Berger singled, and a walk to Peter Fiore put two Black Knights on the bases for Josh Toole.  Toole’s double to left scored Berger and Fiore.  Marcus Rivera, running for Toole, scored on Logan Harelson’s sacrifice fly.

The JV Knights did not play.  Because the JV Field was built in a storm water containment zone, there was still water on the field.

With the win, Hempfield is 2-2 on the young season and 1-1 in Section One play.  It is the 817th win for the Hempfield Baseball Program.

March 30, 2022: Penn Manor 5, Hempfield 0

Penn Manor scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and used a three run sixth inning to defeat the visiting Black Knights at Cooper Park on the campus of Millersville University.

Both teams received outstanding pitching from their respective starters – Hunter Sipel for the Comets and Austin Dunlap for the Black Knights.  Dunlap struck out six and walked one, allowing ten hits – four of which left the infield.  Sipel struck out nine, walked four, and allowed just three hits.

Hempfield put runners on second and third in the first and fifth innings but were unable to push any runs across the plate.  Peter Skiadis’ RBI single to left scored Dalton Green in the fourth inning; Hunter Sipel’s triple to right plated Jamison Ford in the fifth, and Ethan Adelman’s single to center brought home two Penn Manor runs in the sixth.

The JV Knights fell to the JV Comets, 7-6.  The JV Knights are 1-2 on the season.

With the loss, Hempfield is 1-2 and 0-1 in Section One play.

March 29, 2022: Governor Mifflin 21, Hempfield 3

Governor Mifflin capitalized on nine Hempfield errors and several other defensive lapses to come from behind and win on the road in Landisville.

Hempfield’s starting pitcher Logan Harelson deserved a better fate, throwing shut out baseball into the fourth inning. The visitors capitalized on a costly error in the fourth and evened the score 3-3. They would add on, scoring five unearned in the fifth; three unearned in the sixth; and five more unearned in the seventh.

The JV Knights were victorious by a score of 8-2, evening their record at 1-1.

With the loss, Hempfield is 1-1 on the young season.

March 25, 2022:  Hempfield 11, Lower Dauphin 0

The 2022 Hempfield Baseball season got underway on a crisp, cloudy afternoon in Hummelstown. Cameron Berger and friends started the season nicely, pushing across three runs in the first inning. Berger singled to start the game. With two outs and Berger at second, Gavin Constein’s two strike single to left scored the game’s first run. Josh Toole doubled to score Constein and Chuck Sheerer finished the inning’s scoring when his single plated Marcus Rivera, who was running for Toole. Hempfield’s run in the second inning was courtesy of Logan Harelson and Cody Fatta — Harelson led off the inning with a single and scored on Fatta’s double.

Hempfield sent eleven batters to the plate in the fifth inning. Hits by Toole, Harelson and Fatta helped widen the margin; Sheerer, Berger, Peter Fiore and Constein all reached base to help the offensive effort, as did an RBI ball on the ground, at a negative launch angle, off the bat of Aiden Rodenberger.

Senior Austin Dunlap pitched brilliantly for Hempfield. The left hander allowed three hits over six innings, walking none and striking out eight. Dunlap was assisted by two remarkable diving plays to take hits off the board in the third inning from Chuck Sheerer and Aiden Rodenberger.

The JV Knights fell by a score of 6-3 and start the season 0-1.

With the win, Hempfield begins the season at 1-0. It is the 816th win for the Hempfield Baseball Program.
